Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 29, 2026

Stenovo is a transcription service: you upload an audio or video file and Stenovo turns it into a searchable transcript and a summary. An optional browser extension can also capture the audio playing in a browser tab you choose. This policy explains what data Stenovo collects, why, how it is handled, and the choices you have.

1. Who we are

Stenovo ("Stenovo", "we", "us") is the developer of the Stenovo transcription service and the accompanying browser extension. For any privacy question or request, contact us at support@stenovo.online.

2. What we collect

Account information

When you sign in with Google, we receive a limited set of profile information from Google (your name, email address, and a Google account identifier), which we use solely to create and identify your account. We do not receive your Google password.

Files you upload

When you upload an audio or video file, we store it temporarily so that it can be transcribed. The file is processed to extract its audio and produce a transcript, and is then deleted automatically as soon as processing finishes, whether it succeeded or failed. We do not keep your original file after that.

Captured tab audio

When you explicitly start a capture on a tab, the extension records that tab's audio and streams it to our service for transcription. Audio capture only happens for the specific tab you invoke Stenovo on, only after you start it, and stops when you stop the capture. The extension does not capture your microphone, other tabs, or your screen.

Microphone recordings

The app has a Record button that captures audio from your microphone. It runs only when you start it yourself, only after your browser has asked for and received your permission, and it stops when you stop it or when the recording reaches your plan's per-file length limit. The recording is handled exactly like a file you upload: it is transcribed and then deleted, and only the transcript is kept. Stenovo never opens your microphone on its own, and the browser extension never uses it at all.

Transcripts and session data

We store the transcripts and summaries produced from the files you upload and the sessions you capture, together with basic metadata about each one (such as a title, duration, language, timestamps, and status), so you can view your results in the app.

Technical data

Like most online services, our servers process standard technical information (such as IP address and request timing) as needed to operate the service securely and reliably.

Analytics and cookies

We use Google Analytics to understand how people find and use our website, app, and browser extension: for example which pages and buttons are used, when a transcription is started or saved, and whether a visit came from an advertising campaign. On the website and app this uses cookies; in the browser extension we send the same kind of usage events (such as starting a transcription, signing in, and errors) to Google Analytics. Google Analytics processes this usage data (which can include approximate location and device information) on our behalf. We use it only in aggregate to measure and improve the service and our marketing; we do not record which sites you capture, and we do not use your captured audio or transcripts for analytics or advertising.

We also keep our own first-party analytics, including how you first reached us (such as the advertising campaign or website you came from), to measure which marketing brings people to Stenovo.

3. How we use your data

We do not sell your data, and we do not use your captured audio or transcripts to serve advertising.

4. Service providers

To deliver transcription we rely on trusted third-party infrastructure:

These providers process data on our behalf to provide the service and are not permitted to use it for their own unrelated purposes.

5. Data retention

We retain your account information, transcripts, and summaries for as long as your account is active so the service remains useful to you. Uploaded files are deleted automatically as soon as processing finishes, and captured audio is processed to produce a transcript and is not retained as a stored audio file by Stenovo after the session is finalized. In both cases we keep the resulting text, not the original audio or video. You can delete your account and associated transcripts at any time from within the app (see "Your rights" below).

6. How we protect your data

Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/WSS) and stored on reputable cloud infrastructure with access controls. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

7. Your rights

You can delete your data yourself at any time from within the app: delete any single transcript from your library, or use Delete account in the user menu to remove your account and everything in it. You can also request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data and transcripts by emailing support@stenovo.online from the address associated with your account. Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA.

Your US privacy choices

If you are a resident of California or another US state with a similar privacy law, you can opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Outside the EEA we allow analytics and advertising cookies by default; use the control below to turn them off on this device. Your choice is remembered with a cookie and applies to both our website and app.

8. Recording responsibly

You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to capture and transcribe the audio you record, and for complying with any applicable laws and the terms of the sites or services whose audio you capture, including consent requirements where they apply.

9. Children

Stenovo is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
